Development of Medicinal Plants Gardens in Schools/Colleges of New Delhi

 

The project is a joint initiative of National Medicinal Plant Board (NMPB), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi and Centre for Environment Education which targets 300 schools of New Delhi. The project ensures sustainable practices for use and conservation of Medicinal Plants Gardens by partnering schools to conserve medicinal plants through sustainable development. The project is also run in partnership with many NGO partnerships of the GEF Small Grants Program, Ecoroots Foundation (Rakesh Khatri); I Dream (Rohit Prakash) and Om Prakash teacher Govt High School, Sector 16 Chandigarh (who is the key resource person).

 

The project promotes intergenerational knowledge between schools for effective processing and benefits from medicinal plants. Through the development of Herbal Medicinal Plants Gardens in the schools and colleges conservation of medicinal plants will be addressed in our day to day life for better health and immunity.  At present, a wide range of medicinal plants are threatened to extinction due to several factors like deforestation, over exploitation, improper collection due to lack of knowledge about proper techniques and poor investments in adopting their use.

 

Application and conservation of medicinal plants in our day to day life will surely promote their values among the society members.  Based on their importance and need of conservation of the plants Centre for Environment Education has listed 26varieties of herbs and shrubs which will be planted in the Medicinal Plants Gardens. These include: Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh),  Stevia spp.(Meethi tulsi),Spilanthes acmella (Akarkara), Kalanchoe pinnata (Pather Chatt),

Vinca rosea (Sadabahar), Bacopa monneire (Brahmi), Acorus calamus ((Sweet Flag), Aloe vera  (Guar Patha) Mimosa pudica (Touch Me Not), Cymbopogan citrates (Lemon Grass), Trachyspermum ammi (Ajwain),Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), Mentha piperita (Peppermint),  Lavandula spica (Lavender),

Plantago ovate (Isabgol), Lawsonia Incermis (Mehandi),     Ocimum Grassitum (Ram Tulsi (Niazbo)), Phyllanthbus amarus (Bhui Amla), Moringa olifera (Sohanjana),  Morus alba (Shahtoot),        Azadirachta indica(Neem), Hibiscus rosa- Sinensis (Chinese Hibiscus),  Nerium Oleander (Indian Oleander), Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy), Gloriosa superba (Agni Shikha), Argyreia nervosa (Elephant Creeper).

 

The activities will include conducting awareness workshops and meetings with schools and colleges; establishing 10 lead schools in each area of Delhi NCR region that will act as providers as mother nurseries which will provide saplings to the nearby schools and society members on charge basis; engaging the students in poster making competition, essay writing; field trips; medicinal plants registers preparation, herbarium files preparation and setting up instant medicinal plant use processing unit as per the school�s and student�s convenience. Constant updates and meetings with Dr Jitendra Sharma, IFS, CEO NMPB; Dr Meenakshi Negi, IFS Deputy CEO NMPB; and Dr Kavita Tyagi, Consultant and others
